Joining the Ramakrishna Order as Monk

Basic Requirements

Healthy, unmarried, educated men satisfying the following requirements can join as trainees to become monks of the Ramakrishna Order (women are addressed in the footnote):

Age and education

For Indian nationals: The aspirant must be above eighteen (18) years of age. The upper age limit depends upon the educational level.
1) 22 years for School Final / Matriculation or equivalent passed with minimum 60% marks.
2) 25 years for Higher Secondary Exam. with minimum 50% marks.
3) 28 years for B.A / B.Sc. / B.Com. / Diploma (2-3 years).
4) 30 years for M.A. / M.Sc. / M.Com. / B.E. / B.Tech. / M.B.B.S. / M.B.A. / Post Graduate Diploma or equivalent professional qualification.
For foreign / western nationals upper age limit is 36 years.
Original mark sheets certificates should be submitted.

Philosophy of life

The aspirant should be attracted to the philosophy followed by the Ramakrishna - Order as exemplified by the lives of Shri Ramakrishna, Sri Sri Ma Sarada, Swami Vivekananda and other direct disciples. He should be well read in the Ramakrishna - Vivekananda literature. Prior association with any centre of Ramakrishna Order (Math, Mission, Ashrama or Vedanta Society) would be very helpful in this regard. The aspirant should have or arrange to get initiation (Mantra Diksha) from the Ramakrishna Order.


The aspirant must be physically and mentally fit and will have to clear medical tests before being accepted into the organization.


The aspirant must be free from any family obligations and legal entanglements that may weigh on his conscience and act as a disturbing factor in his proposed monastic way of life.
It should be noted that he shall not be paid any monetary compensation as wages / salary etc. He shall stay of his own free will following the rules and regulations of the Order.
Foreign nationals are requested to contact the Centre closest to them. Passport, visa travel permit etc. are the responsibility of the aspirant.
*Women can join the sister organization - Sarada Math.
